Heat Generating Garden PavilionMARB 34: Studio Forage
Within the ‘Studio Forage’, the challenge was to discover something interesting and approach it in a “forage” way. The limited sunshine at the back of my garden, which meant the grass did not grow well there, became the starting point of my project. Throughout the semester, I asked myself if it was possible to create some kind of sun quality in a place without sunlight in an analogous way, specifically heat. I wondered how heat could be captured in a shaded place.
After several experimental designs, the idea was developed further. A structure emerged from several curved and welded aluminium sheets, forming a large plate that folded over itself. Adding a plastic foil greenhouse to this created both an indoor and outdoor space that became significantly warmer than the surrounding places where people resided. To test this project, 3D scans were made of the surrounding area, which were then fed into software to measure the solar incidence and calculate how many hours of sunlight the top of the structure would receive, to make loose estimates of the temperature inside in this way.
