OPO 34 was about making precise interventions in different ways. When we were asked to make an intervention on a site of our own choosing, one site immediately came to mind. The abandoned industrial site of the Stella brewery.

The building has gigantic silos that one can even see along the exterior. A signature building for Leuven. The choice was strengthened by the recently planned renovations that would replace the iconic building with lofts, which we found very regrettable.

To make our intervention we first had to study the site; we did this using multiple media. We relied on the interesting endings of the existing silos. These cones seemed to emerge from the roof inside the large hollow interior.

By basing ourselves on this and engaging in an interesting dialogue with light and dust, we tried to mirror the existing cones. For this, we used spotlights that illuminated both cones. In this way, we tried to create a space that felt massive and tangible despite being all dust and light. This translated into an hourglass that slowly deflated.

Since much of the brief was around “capturing”, we decided to capture it via photographs and video.
